If you love social media and enjoy sharing content, or even just love capturing videos and snaps on your phone, you might be facing the dilemma of how to capture one of the biggest days of your life, while also enjoying every second of it. This is why people are turning to wedding content creators. But if you're wondering what exactly they do (and don't do!), and whether you should you hire one, you've come to the right place.

What is a Wedding Content Creator?

We know a lot of you might be thinking: we have a photographer and a videographer booked, why would we also need a wedding content creator? The simple answer is that these suppliers all do very different things and your wedding content creator cannot replace your other suppliers. While your photographer and videographer are there to produce a polished set of photos and portraits or a professionally shot wedding film that tells the story of the day, your wedding content creator will instead focus on capturing the kind of user-generated content taken on a phone that we're used to seeing on social media.

Not only this, but you will usually have all the content they capture in your inbox by the end of the day, or the next day, to look at and share immediately afterwards, so there's no wait time as they don't have an intense edit to do like your photographer and videographer does. The content is much more behind the scenes and candid in style, and might also include recreating viral video trends depending on what you fancy.

Top Tip: It's so important for all your suppliers to work harmoniously on your wedding day. As it's still a very new category it's a good idea to tell your other suppliers in advance that you have hired a wedding content creator so they know who they will be working alongside.

Where Did The Demand for This New Category Start?

Like many of the big trends in the wedding world, the demand for wedding content creators started in America and Australia. Seeing as the average age to get married in the US is 29, and in Australia it's 30, most couples getting married are digital natives and social media obsessed. While in Ireland, the average age to get married is a little older at 35, we are no less obsessed with our phones.

Influencers with a slew of followers wanted to capture and share their big day on their social media in a very planned and deliberate way, and it quickly filtered out to the masses and a new supplier category was born. Someone you can trust to get all the shots and videos you capture yourself, or the ones you need for viral trends and transitions. Someone who knows how to get your good angles and allows you to put away your phone and be in the moment!

What Does a Wedding Content Creator Do?

We asked one of Ireland's very first Wedding Content Creators, Pamela Kiely of Toast, to find out all what to expect when you start working with a WCC. "There are different styles of content you can have created," she explains. "First, I chat with my couples in advance to see what they want. Some people just want clips and photos for their own personal use, maybe not even to share. If they're not comfortable in front of the camera, I'm won't make them do anything they're not comfortable doing. You really tailor it to the person." She explains that some couples favour behind the scenes, natural, candid content that capture the beautiful aesthetic of the day, while other want to do viral TikTok trends, transitions, reels and other fun social media stuff. It's really up to you to decide what you want.

Unplugged Weddings

More and more couples are opting for an unplugged wedding. For some couples this means having a photo-free ceremony, and for others it's more about limiting the use of social media throughout the day, but either way, the ethos behind this is to encourage your guests to put down their devices, and be more engaged and in the moment. Having a wedding content creator on hand means that you, your partner and your wedding parties can totally unplug and really be present in the day.

It can be a lot of pressure on bridesmaids or family who aren't confident in capturing digital content to the level that a wedding content creator would, whether that's videos or clips. "The weddings that I've worked on, the brides and bridesmaids have really been able to relax. They're on their phones less or not at all, as they dont' feel like they have to record stuff," says Pamela. An unplugged wedding also means that you don't have lots of people holding up their phones getting in the way of your photographer and videographer's shots at the ceremony.

What is Involved and What is the Cost?

Packages start from around €850 for six hours and it goes up from there. Usually there's an initial meeting with you and your potential wedding content creator on a discovery call. It's important to see if you like their vibe and they get your vision. You then decide on the package you want, based on length of time, and the edits you would like afterwards. Then you usually have a call two weeks before the wedding to discuss the timeline, the key moments, the style, the shot list and any trends you want to include.

Like choosing any supplier, how do you know they’re good at what they do? Aine Leech founder of the Wedding Content Company has this advice: “Do your research rather than go for the first person who pops up on Google Search. Start by looking at their Instagram and website, to see if you like what you see. If you don’t see the type of thing you have in mind – ask if they have examples they can send you. Most of all, it’s important that you get on with your Content Creator, and you’ll know from that first call whether you have a rapport. They are with you the whole day, and it’s quite intimate - they’re basically your new best friend for a day.”
