Why You Shouldn't Choose Your Bridesmaids Too Early

Hit pause on those proposals for just a jiffy!

Diving into the exciting world of wedding preparation is a total rush, especially when you are still high on the engagement buzz. But there are some big decisions that we recommend taking your time to really think about with a clear head. While you will want to lock down your venue and date quickly there are some things that can wait. Choosing your bridesmaids is one of them, and we have some very good reasons why you shouldn't choose or ask your bridesmaids or bridesmen too early. So, before you begin assembling those bridesmaid boxes, we suggest you read the below to make sure you don't pop the question a tad too soon.

Nail Down Numbers

Firstly, let us say, you don’t need to have the same number of bridesmaids as groomsmen. However, take some time with your partner and make sure that you both have a definite and ‘fair-to-both sides’ decision. One of you being forced to choose between two pals, or worse, to ask someone to make up an even number, is the last thing you want to happen. Wait until you are both in a position to select your wedding party as a couple, logically.

Role & Responsibilities

Being part of the bridal party comes with responsibility, fact. There's an implied understanding that they will be there to help you from planning the hen, and dress shopping, to helping with DIY projects, right through to carrying emergency snacks and topping up your lippie on your wedding day. So before asking someone to be your bridesmaid, ask yourself if they're capable of being there for you the way you're going to need them to be.

Things Change

People's cicumstances can change over the course of a long engagement - what if your friend is pregnant and expecting her baby around your wedding day, or is a new mum and feeling the effects of sleep deprivation, or she's landed her dream job and it's taking up a lot of her time. Waiting a while will allow you to assess who has the spare time to support you. They even might be relieved not to have another thing on their plate to manage. Relationships also change over time, there's always a chance you might drift apart over the course of two years, or you might even get closer with another friend who you know would make an amazing bridesmaid. Keep your options open!

Budget

In order for you and your partner to determine your wedding party plans, it is best to pause the proposals until you are at least a few months into the planning. Waiting until you have your venue and the majority of your suppliers booked will allow you to nail down a budget and how much you can afford to spend on bridesmaids. Remember you will be paying for dresses, shoes and accessories, as well as hair and makeup, and maybe accommodation. Read up on expected wedding costs & budget tips here to help you.

Take Your Time

The recommended time for asking your bridesmaids is around 12 months before the wedding date - around the same time you should be setting off in search of your gorgeous wedding gown. Not only should you have a good grasp on your wedding plans but it will also allow your gang a sufficient time to clear their diaries and get on top of their duties. You can still enjoy the prosecco-popping with your girls without asking the question right away. When the time does come, we suggest you plan a special proposal moment, and look forward to creating the most incredible memories with your best friends.
