The Joyful Jazz Age: Róisín & Chris' Art Deco Wedding Bash

Peacock feathers, mobster tables and lashings of fun

Lights. Camera. Action! Ready to be swept up by the dramatic beauty of this Art Deco real wedding? Róisín and Chris' celebration in The Set Theatre at Langtons House Hotel was a total show stopper and we're here to bring you all the details from Act I to the final scene! Róisín the bride is a fashion designer so you know she's got an eye, and let's just say her personal style and personal touches, make this wedding one to pin. Featuring peacock feathers, homemade lip balm, flowers from the Tyne River and a ring with Namibian meteorite, this wedding wooed us all the way through. Enchanting images on the day were captured by Nina Val Photography and we think you'll love this bodacious bash. Ready? Let's go!

A lover of all things from the frivolous flapper era, the couple's Jazz-Age inspired wedding started with Roisin's engagement ring is 1930s German Art Deco. It came from a small company run by two sisters in Brighton who specialise in vintage jewellery.

Amazingly, Chris' ring is a wooden band with a titanium inner ring and has Namibian meteorite running through it. Straight from the stars!

This maid of honour dress from Coast was so pretty in the evening sunlight. Róisín chose dresses from different suppliers that suited her bridesmaids individually and they matched perfectly.

A past student of The National College of Art & Design, Róisín proved herself a crafting queen. She did the stationery herself, which is very Jazz Age, as well as making bridesmaids boxes. Each one contained homemade goat's milk soap with essential oils and dried lavender from the garden on top to look pretty. To top it off she made vegan coconut lip balm, made with coconut oil; this woman has endless talent!

Róisín's dress was from Eliza Jane Howell and fits the Art Deco vibe she was going for perfectly. Róisín craftily added the sequins leftover from her wedding dress to her fabulous birdcage headpiece that she got for just £5 on ebay. Proving her green credentials even further she also sourced her white and gold Rachel Simpson shoes as pre-loved on the site too. Her aesthetic was complemented perfectly with her beauty look from Nicola Plummer Makeup which was full on old-Hollywood glamour - that red lip, flawless skin and perfect eyeliner gives us serious screen siren vibes.

Róisín says the couple met when she moved to London after winning a fashion design internship with River Island. "I'd just finished my degree at NCAD. My boss from River Island was from Newcastle and her friend ‘ginger Chris’ had sent her a teddy bear style doll but with his face, and that was always on her desk." When Róisín went to her house for drinks one night, she recognised him as the ‘ginger Chris’ doll. "As soon as I walked into the living room I thought he was really attractive and we just clicked." After two years of long distance, Róisín moved to Newcastle!"

The couple's page boy made a rather hilarious ceremony entrance carrying a kid's wedding sign that set the tone and let guests know that this day would be big on fun.

Róisín chose deep navy blue for her bridesmaids' dresses which was the perfect addition and accented the peacock feathers featured in the flowers and buttonholes perfectly. She walked down the aisle to 'I only have eyes for you' by The Flamingos.

The lavender in the groom's buttonhole was grown by Róisín's mum which was such a special touch to this Art Deco wedding, pairing beautifully with dried grass and roses for a vintage floral feel.

The proposal came about when the couple went to Lisbon for Chris’ birthday. "I'd just woken up and Chris was in the kitchen. I think the electricity was gone because of the kettle and I came out and Chris was on one knee. I looked around as I thought he was fixing something and he held up the ring box and written inside was ‘will you marry me, you sh**?’ in my eye liner, on the back of a piece of receipt! It was hilarious," says Róisín.

Róisín chose deep magenta calla lillies and baby's breath a beautiful and meaningful choice for a wedding day, and the perfect colour pop for the bridesmaids colour palette as well as the touches of rich red and purple in the venue.

Róisín spent a lot of time and effort making sure her flowers were perfect - a year to be precise! "I bought a lot of the dried flowers from Facebook marketplace such as the palm spears and the pampas grass. I sprayed most of the small palm spears gold and all the thistles gold. I did this over the course of the year. The thistles were picked from the Tyne riverbed up at Newburn where I row. I saw them and thought they look so dramatic and collected them after the summer and they were dry. My rowing team still think I'm crazy," she laughs.

The couples choice of venue was so original and we wanted to know why they chose a theatre. Róisín says, "It was dramatic without being imposing and still cosy. It was perfect. As soon as my bridesmaids walked into the venue they said to each other ‘this is very Ro and Chris.'"

The decor, the monochrome tiles, the dark wood panelling, gold gilded fittings and the furnishings all made the Langtons House Hotel the perfect choice for this wedding.

"I wanted it to feel like a celebration of us, our families, and not a show," says Róisín. "It was really important that nothing was forced, we weren’t doing something just because it was expected. It was a non-religious ceremony because it was just about Chris and I and our commitment to one another. For us it was perfect."

This photo shoot on the streets of Kilkenny town make the most of the colourful shop fronts and quaint streetscapes that vibe perfectly with their vintage aesthetic.

This the moon piece was again artfully created by Róisín and was the perfect backdrop for photos for guests in the evening.

This wedding was full of brilliant jokes and these mugshot boards sure gave us a laugh. Another stylishly sustainable element to proceedings was the use of old textured gin bottles to hold dried flowers.

Róisín also made the table signs which featured the names of mobsters. "Chris is really interested in the early gangs like Al Capone and we went with those names as some were full of character such as Ma Barker."

For their honeymoon they went to Pisa, Florence and Milan. "I'd definitely recommend Italy, staying in non-tourist places. Trains were amazing and the food of course! Florence was our favourite. It was really romantic. The best part was Michelangelo Square when the sun was going down. You could see all of Florence," says Róisín.

A huge thank you to Róisín and Chris for sharing their beautiful Art Deco theatre wedding with us. In addition, these gems caught on camera by Nina Val Photography deserve a special mention too. There's more swoon-worthy material for you in the gallery below!
